Your refrigerator runs around the clock, so even a small efficiency problem can add to your electricity use over time. A fridge that suddenly seems louder, runs longer, or struggles to maintain a steady temperature may be working harder than necessary.
Before assuming the appliance needs to be replaced, look for these signs.
1. The refrigerator runs almost constantly
A refrigerator naturally cycles on and off throughout the day. But if you rarely hear it stop, something may be making it work harder.
Dirty condenser coils, poor airflow, a damaged door seal, an overly warm kitchen, or an incorrect temperature setting can all increase the workload. ENERGY STAR recommends keeping the refrigerator around 35–38°F and leaving enough space around the appliance for air circulation.

2. Your electricity bill has gone up without a clear reason

4. The door seal feels loose
The rubber gasket around the refrigerator door should create a tight seal when the door closes. If it’s cracked, warped, dirty, or no longer gripping properly, cold air can escape continuously.
Try the simple paper test: close the door on a sheet of paper and pull it. If the paper slides out with almost no resistance, inspect the gasket more closely.

5. Frost keeps building up inside the freezer
A little frost can happen, but persistent or heavy frost deserves attention.

10. Your refrigerator is simply very old
Age doesn’t automatically mean a refrigerator wastes energy, but older models generally have less efficient technology than newer refrigerators.
If the appliance is more than 15 years old and you’re also seeing several of the signs above—constant cycling, poor cooling, damaged seals, excessive frost, or rising electricity consumption—it may be worth comparing its estimated annual energy use with newer models.
